The next shot from Cupid’s bow may be fatal in USA Today bestselling, Agatha Award-winning author Ellen Byron’s hearty and delightful seventh Cajun Country mystery.

In Pelican, Louisiana, Valentine’s Day has a way of warming the heart, despite the February chill. But the air at Crozat Plantation B&B turns decidedly frigid when celebrity chef Phillippe Chanson checks in. And when the arrogant Phillippe–in town to open his newest Cajun-themed restaurant–perishes in a fiery boat crash, Maggie Crozat’s dear friend JJ lands in very cold water.

Did JJ, proprietor of Junie’s Oyster Bar and Dance Hall, murder Phillippe because he feared the competition? Might Maggie’s mother, Ninette, have bumped off the chef for stealing one of her cherished recipes? Or was the culprit a local seafood vendor, miffed because Phillippe was somehow able to sell oysters for a remarkably reasonable price, despite an oyster shortage?

Maggie had planned to devote her February to art lessons in New Orleans, a present from her sweetheart, Bo. But now she has to focus on helping her friend and her mother cross a murder charge off the menu. Meanwhile, Maggie receives a series of anonymous gifts that begin as charming but grow increasingly disturbing. Does Maggie have an admirer–or a stalker? And are these mysterious gifts somehow related to Phillippe’s murder?

Blood may be thicker than water, but this case is thicker than gumbo. And solving it will determine whether Maggie gets hearts and roses–or hearse and lilies–this Valentine’s Day.

On Skein of Death by Allie Pleiter – Blog Tour & Giveaway

Goodreads description:

For Libby Beckett, opening her charming yarn shop, and introducing customers to the joys of knitting and crochet, is the work she was meant to do. Until the yarn she loves is used for murder….

Libby has come home to Collinstown, Maryland to live her dream and open her own yarn shop, aptly named Y.A.R.N., along the Chester River. To Libby, Y.A.R.N. stands for “You’re Absolutely Ready Now.” But the acronym changes whenever inspiration strikes, and customers add to the list of suggestions that fill the blackboard wall in a shop stuffed with color, fiber, and comfort.

Libby is thrilled when she lands famous Norwegian knitting celebrity Perle Langager for a series of events at Y.A.R.N. Libby’s English bulldog, Hank, has been modeling one of Perle’s doggie sweaters, and customers just can’t wait to see Perle in action. The mayor of Collinstown even decrees a Collinstown Yarn Day to celebrate. But once Perle arrives in town, she seems distracted and on edge. And when she’s found strangled with a skein of red yarn, Libby knows she has to solve a knotty mystery before her new life unravels.

A Glimmer of a Clue (A Fairy Garden Mystery) by Daryl Wood Gerber

Synopsis:

Courtney Kelly has a shop full of delights, a cat named Pixie, a green thumb—and a magical touch when it comes to garden design. But in Carmel-by-the-Sea, things aren’t all sweetness and fairy lights . . .

When Courtney’s friend Wanda gets into a ponytail-pulling wrestling match in public with a nasty local art critic, Courtney stops the fight with the help of a garden hose. But Lana Lamar has a talent for escalating things and creating tension, which she succeeds in doing by threatening a lawsuit, getting into yet another scuffle—in the midst of an elegant fundraiser, no less—and lobbing insults around like pickleballs.

Next thing Courtney knows, Lana is on the floor, stabbed with a decorative letter opener from one of Courtney’s fairy gardens, and Wanda is standing by asking “What have I done?” But the answer may not be as obvious as it seems, since Wanda is prone to sleepwalking and appears to be in a daze. Could she have risen from her nap and committed murder while unconscious? Or is the guilty party someone else Lana’s ticked off, like her long-suffering husband? To find out, Courtney will have to dig up some dirt . . .

Interview with Bettina M. Johnson, Paranormal Cozy Mystery Author

I am very pleased to have Bettina M. Johnson here on The Book’s the Thing today. She’s going to tell us a bit about herself and her writing process, so please join me in giving her a warm welcome!

TBTT: Do the ideas for your books ever come from real-life occurrences, or are they strictly pulled from your imagination?

BMJ: Real life tends to blend with my imagination. Some of the characters in my books remind me of people I know or have met. Some remind me of old movie characters that I’ve tapped to make similar. I have had situations occur in the present or from my past which I incorporate in my stories, and some of my childhood memories wound up in a chapter or two. In my Lily Sweet Mysteries, there is a scene where the great-grandparents are dancing a polka around the living room and family members are laughing and clapping along in encouragement. This is a cherished memory of my own grandparents during one holiday. We moved the coffee table and a few chairs and my grandma and grandpa were laughing and dancing around the room….I’d never witnessed them being so happy with each other and it was a tender loving moment that remained with me. Now that moment in time is forever recorded on the pages of that book!  As for my Fortune-Telling Twins Mysteries, I tend to have a bit of the psychic woo woo Maggie Fortune is revered for. There have been certain times in my life where I held something and got a flash of the past. Even touching someone’s hand…I can’t explain it, but I see or know things and they usually come true or already occurred. Kind of freaky cool…and I knew I had to have a character that was adept in this phenomena, and delve deeper into a subject that whigs me out a bit!

TBTT: Do you have any particular writing rituals that you adhere to or unique methods of overcoming writers’ block?

BMJ: I’m one of the lucky few, I guess. I have yet to experience any sort of writer’s block. Now writers anxiety? That’s a different story. Every single time I begin a new book, I open Word, stare at the page and have this niggling thought run through my mind that perhaps I won’t be able to write the next in the series. But I take a deep breathe, relax my hands on the keys and whisper to my characters that I’m ready for their words. They’ve never failed to begin talking.

TBTT: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?

BMJ: Would it be cliche of me to say I read? A lot? I do, however. I also love my Jeep and adore going junkin’ (hitting yard sales or outdoor flea markets and antique venues) in her. She’s a mojito green Jeep Wrangler Sahara, and I love nothing better than to drive up to the mountains and explore. I’d constantly be on the road driving all over the USA if I could…I’m in love with the idea of seeing every square inch of the nation and doing the grand experience all the way down to the outré roadside attractions. I wanted to be an archeologist when I was little, and a famous singer, but that’s another story! So my love of old things has me excited in museums and historical societies, looking at old documents or hunting for treasure in other people attics! I also like to sing (back to that dream of mine) and used to do so in nightclubs back in my twenties. And to unwind, I like to sculpt with polymer clay. My entire family is artistic. My dad sings like an opera star and my sister is a fine arts artist. We are a creative bunch!

TBTT: Which genres or authors do you like to read? Are there any books or authors in particular that you’d say have influenced your desire to write?

BMJ: I love cozy mysteries (of course) or any good mystery book. Mystery romance. Fantasy genre. History and biographies. I’m a history major and where some people would have a difficult time getting through a text book on the past, I can lose myself for days on a subject. Some of the authors who influenced me did so by tickling my funny bone. The late, great Joan Hess and her Maggody series made me yearn to try my hand at humor. Whatever method I’m borrowing from her can be found in my books. My greatest joy would be to have my readers spit out their favorite beverage at the antics and hijinks my characters get in to…or at one of the many one liners my MC cracks from time to time. I also am a fan of authors Paige Shelton, Elizabeth Hayden, Dannika Dark, Ann Purser, Nancy Atherton, to name a few…as well as the greats; Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe, Hans Christian Andersen. There are too many to mention and all have shaped me in some way!

TBTT: What types of stories can we expect to see from you in the future?

BMJ: I am going to expand my Lily Sweet world and give one of the supporting characters their own tales. I’ve already done this with Lily’s cousins, Maggie and Ellie Fortune. They were introduced in book 3 of the Lily Sweet Mysteries and now have their own series. I just introduced a crossroads demon named Pandora who deserves her own series…she’s a hoot! There is a recurring character names Tarni Vanderzee, a siren, who has her own series slated for later this year; The Secret Sirens Mysteries. Tarni will be telling her tale that will go back and forth from the present time to the 1980’s. I’m looking forward to starting those. I also have a character I am developing named Samantha Geist, who will be a ghost hunter whose job is to move those souls along that are trapped here for one reason or the other and if she fails, a demon swoops in to claim the lost soul in victory – and Samantha just happens to fall for one of the demons even though they are enemies…a paranormal romance in the making!

TBTT: And just for fun – Coffee or Tea?

BMJ: I have a burr grinder. Only buy ethically sourced whole beans, and my dream is to someday have the ability to roast and grind them myself for optimum freshness and taste. Does that give you an idea of what my preference is?

Bio:  I always knew I wanted to write.  As a kid, way before the technology age had hit, I’d be stuck in the car with the folks as we drove from our home on Staten Island, NY, where I was born and raised, to our family property in the Catskill Mountains. To drive away boredom, I would sit, staring out the window, and create adventures in my mind.

As the years passed, I’d start writing a book, then stop, then start again only to let life get in the way, until one day I had an epiphany—if I waited any longer, all those wonderful characters in my head would never have their stories told, and that made me sad. So, I began to write. Once I started, it became apparent nothing would ever stop me again.

I write paranormal mysteries, romance and suspense that fall somewhere in between a cozy mystery and urban fantasy. I always write with humor and hope to keep my readers guessing to the very end—and I always add a dash of romance to keep things interesting.

I live near the North Georgia mountains on what I like to call a farm, with my husband and almost adult kids, a Cairn Terrier, two black cats, a tuxedo cat and fish. Occasionally other critters show up to keep things exciting.

The Ghost and the Haunted Portrait by Cleo Coyle – Blog Tour & Giveaway

Synopsis:

Bookshop owner Penelope Thornton-McClure and her gumshoe ghost team up to solve the stunning mystery at the heart of a madwoman’s self-portrait in this all new installment from New York Times bestselling author Cleo Coyle.

While gathering a collection of vintage book cover paintings for a special event in her quaint Rhode Island bookshop, Penelope discovers a spooky portrait of a beautiful woman, one who supposedly went mad, according to town gossip. Seymour, the local mailman, falls in love with the haunting image and buys the picture, refusing to part with it, even as fatal accidents befall those around it. Is the canvas cursed? Or is something more sinister at work?

For answers, Pen turns to an otherworldly source: Jack Shepard, PI. Back in the 1940s, Jack cracked a case of a killer cover artist, and (to Pen’s relief) his spirit is willing to help her solve this mystery, even if he and his license did expire decades ago.

But one person won’t be tasting the Mexican bakery’s latest specialty. Ambitious school board president Nessa Renchrik has been murdered. Like the rest of this close-knit community, Ivy is shocked. But she’s just as surprised to discover her beau—restaurateur Miguel Baptista—had his own fling with Nessa back in the day and now the police have this half-baked notion he might have killed her. Spotlight on Lady Rosamund and the Horned God by Barbara Monajem

Lady Rosamund And The Horned God – A Rosie and McBrae Mystery by Barbara Monajem

About Lady Rosamund And The Horned God

Lady Rosamund And The Horned God – A Rosie and McBrae Regency Mystery Historical Cozy Mystery 2nd in Series Publisher – Level Best Books Number of Pages – ~300 Pages

Widowed Lady Rosamund spends the first months of her mourning in the Lake District, where it’s safe and peaceful, and murders are exceedingly rare. Luckily, she is rescued from this tedium by a house party comprised of playwrights, poets, and actors—an immoral set of persons with whom no respectable lady should associate. Even so, she hardly expected to wake in the wee hours to find one of the guests lying dead.

As if that wasn’t troublesome enough, Gilroy McBrae is at the same party, masquerading as a footman to investigate a series of thefts. Was the sudden death an accident—or murder? Almost everyone had reason to loathe their unpleasant fellow guest. Rosie must set aside her confused emotions about McBrae and work with him to find the culprit before an innocent person is accused of the crime.

About the Author

Winner of the Holt Medallion, Maggie, Daphne du Maurier, Reviewer’s Choice and Epic awards, Barbara Monajem wrote her first story at eight years old about apple tree gnomes. She published a middle-grade fantasy when her children were young. When they grew up, she turned to writing for adults, first the Bayou Gavotte paranormal mysteries and then Regency romances with intrepid heroines and long-suffering heroes (or vice versa). Some of her Regencies have magic in them and some don’t (except for the magic of love, which is in every story she writes).

Barbara loves to cook, especially soups, and is an avid reader. There are only two items on her bucket list: to make asparagus pudding and succeed at knitting socks. She’ll manage the first but doubts she’ll ever accomplish the second. This is not a bid for immortality but merely the dismal truth. She lives near Atlanta, Georgia with an ever-shifting population of relatives, friends, and feline strays.
