Since I had no review to post today, I decided to join Bookshelf Fantasies in the Thursday Quotables meme.
This isn’t actually from a book that I’m reading right now, but today’s #fallbookchallenge post on Instagram was a “favorite classic scary book”. I prefer gothic or atmospheric horror, so I chose Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Poe. That got me thinking about my favorite Poe stories, and this quote that I love:
“Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.”
~from Eleonora by Edgar Allan Poe
Now be sure to visit Bookshelf Fantasies for links to more quotes!
I love the quote you shared! And I love Poe!
I love the words people used on a regular basis back then. My hubby and I recently watched Ken Burns’ “The Civil War” for the third or fourth time, and a lot of it is quotes read from letters written by everyday people – regular soldiers (not just the officers), wives of the soldiers and so forth. The language is so beautiful and not what we’d expect for just plain working class folks.

It is. And I don’t think it is that language was any more expressive then than it is now, but people used it more expressively!

Good point. There is a real sincerity there.

Ooh creepy! Never read Edgar Allen Poe, I think he’d be too scary for me I hate horrors 😛 Great quote though!

Thanks! He is more creepy than scary, but I know he’s not for everyone. 😄

I seldom read Poe, or Steven King, but I appreciate their literature contributions. They are too….. scary for me.
