What Are You Reading Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by Its A Reading Thing. To participate, open the book you are currently reading to page 34 (or 34% in your ebook) and answer these three questions. Feel free to leave your answers or a link to your blog post in the comments.

The Questions are:
1. What’s the name of your current read?

2. Go to page 34 in your book or 34% in your eBook and share a complete sentence. (or two!)

3. Would you like to live in the world that exists within your book? Why or why not?

I’m reading a few things this week, but here’s the ebook I’m in the middle of….

1. Isolation by Mary Anna Evans
Isolation (Faye Longchamp, #9)
Faye Longchamp #9

2. “I’m on the far west side of the island, under that big oak tree standing all by itself next to the water.  Something’s not right, Joe. I’m not sure what it is, but something’s not right.”

3. I don’t think I’d want to live here. At first, the idea of being on a private island sounds appealing, but the more you realize just how isolated Faye and her family are from civilization, (and help, if needed) the less ideal it sounds.

How I Learned to Relax About Being a “Cozy” Author and Just Write the Damn Books–Part III

I personally love cozy mysteries, and think there are both good and bad cozies, just like in any genre of books. What do you think? Are you a fan, or is there a reason you prefer not to read them?

Barbara Ross's avatarThe Wickeds

Barb here, sitting on her front porch in Maine and writing on an flawless summer day

Back in February, I started a series of posts about how I came to terms with being a cozy writer. The first one talked about why this designation was an issue for me in the first place. The second, in March, was about how I came to be comfortable as a person with an identity as a cozy author.

Then life intervened. In April-May-June I was hit successively with Crime Bake website deadline-knee crisis-book deadline. But, though as a person I have many, many flaws, I am, at the end of the day (and usually literally at the end of the day), a completer. So herewith is Part III.

So when we left our intrepid heroine, she was happy to be writing a cozy series and comfortable adopting the image of a cozy author…

My answers for this week:
1. Booked for Trouble by Eva Gates
Booked for Trouble (Lighthouse Library Mystery #2)
Lighthouse Library Mystery #2 – Available 9/1/15 from NAL (I received an ARC from the author)

2. I’d been warned the day I started working here that Theodore has what Bertie called “wandering hands”, meaning books would sometimes find themselves in his coat pockets, or make their way to the shelves in his home.

3. Definitely – the Bodie Island Lighthouse sounds like a beautiful place to work (and live).

Somebody I Used to Know
Released today, but I have an ARC and I’m halfway through! It’s turning out to be a quick read because it is hard to put down. 🙂

2. “It’s not those things.” She kept poking the ice. “I don’t want to be…complacent.”

3. Sure – nothing wrong with the setting in this one. There are some unsettling things going on, but they could occur anywhere…

Patriotic Reads for the Long 4th of July Weekend

Although I’m happy to read almost anything at almost anytime, I do sometimes like to tailor my reading to the season. Hercule Poirot’s Christmas at Christmas time, Halowe’en Party in the fall (sense a trend here?), and so on. With the 4th of July just around the corner, and the extra day of free reading time that will give me, I thought it would be fun to read a story that occurs on the 4th of July, or maybe a nice political thriller. If you’d like to do the same, here are a few suggestions…

1. Eeny Meeny by M.J. Arlidge
Eeny Meeny (Helen Grace, #1)

2. Looking at the map, he saw that there were some holiday cottages only a mile or two away. Perhaps if he hurried he could make it there before it got too dark.

3. No! I wouldn’t want to have to live there. Too many bad things are happening at the moment. I’m not even sure I’d want to spend any time with the “nice” people in this story. (I do want to stick around long enough to find out how everything turns out, though! 🙂 )

Bookstore Haul!

I’m on vacation at the moment, visiting my folks in Tennessee. Whenever we come for a visit, I always try to get to the Book Cellar used bookstore in Crossville. They have a huge selection, and some of the best prices I’ve seen in a used book store.

My purchases today:
IMG_1079
I picked up a couple of gothic romance novels, a thriller, and a cozy mystery.

There are always a few boxes out front of the store where they put books that are “free for the taking”. I don’t usually find anything I want in them, but I hit the motherload today! 🙂

There was also a Tami Hoag hardcover with no dust jacket that I picked up. Couldn’t be happier with my finds today!

If you live in the area and haven’t visited, you should. They’re at 184 Woodmere Mall in Crossville, Tennessee.

Visit their Facebook page.

My Answers this week:
1. Walk in the Flesh by Peter Bailey

Walk in the Flesh

From Goodreads: In the aftermath of a terrorist attack Neil is given the chance to serve his country by serving up revenge. He soon becomes England’s premier spy and assassin. As a man he was unpleasant, dangerous and of little use. As a cyborg he is unpleasant, very dangerous and extremely useful. His suicide missions fit his strengths and his weaknesses. He exacts vengeance, kills without mercy, then destroys the evidence by destroying his temporary body. The aftermath is someone else’s problem. (read more)

2. The security check was executed with the deft touch of a pick pocket. While one guard made a great show of passing a portable metal detector over him, it was almost possible to miss the feather light touch from behind patting him down.

3. Right now, I’d have to say no, I would NOT like to live in this world. While not specified, I have the impression that the story takes place in the present or very near future, but there is enough corruption and evil going on that I’m not sure I’d ever feel safe!

1. Death by Coffee – by Alex Erickson
Death by Coffee
Bookstore Cafe Mystery #1

2. I took a moment to brush away the worst of the mess, though some of it had stuck, thanks to the kitty slobber that acted like glue.

3. Pine Hills seems like a pleasant enough medium-small town, and on a normal, non-murder day, I think it would be an ok place to live.

2. The witch accusations all eventually fizzled out, but the Twombleys never lost their reputation for strangeness. They usually seemed to get what they wanted without becoming tyrants in the process.

3. I already live in Illinois, but not in a college town. I think I would enjoy this serene university environment, as long as the murder had been solved long before I arrived, and I could live on campus as a professor rather than a student! 🙂
