3. Would you like to live in the world that exists within your book? Why or why not?

Now for my answers this week…

1. Murder on Wheels by Lynn Cahoon
Watch for a guest post from the author along with my review in a couple of weeks!
Murder on Wheels (A Tourist Trap Mystery Book 6)
Tourist Trap Mystery #6

2. I put the cheesecake into boxes and rang up Darla’s purchase.  She used the Examiner credit card.  I guess she was on assignment with this one.

3. Yes, yes, yes! Right now especially, (It was -1 F when I left my house this morning) I would LOVE to live in South Cove, California! 🙂

I can’t wait to get farther into this cozy – I’m loving it so far. What are you reading this week?

To Be Read Thursdays – 1/7/16

TBR Thursdays

To Be Read Thursdays are a meme hosted by The Writer’s Inkwell. This is a way to feature the books you’ve added to your TBR list over the past week or a newly added book that you are excited about reading in the near future. Anyone is welcome to participate in this meme. Please just link back to the hosting page so she can read your posts.

As I’m constantly adding new books to my TBR pile (either on my bookshelves at home or my virtual shelves on Goodreads),  I thought I’d just share the next few books I hope to read. I say hope, because I have a habit of planning to read one thing, but then getting distracted by another pretty cover. 🙂

The Widow by Fiona Barton (release date 2/16/16 from NAL)
The Widow
I have both a physical ARC, and a digital ARC from NetGalley, so I feel like I really need to read and review this one!

When the police started asking questions, Jean Taylor turned into a different woman. One who enabled her and her husband to carry on, when more bad things began to happen…

But that woman’s husband died last week. And Jean doesn’t have to be her anymore.

The Bone Labyrinth by James Rollins
The Bone Labyrinth (Sigma Force, #11)
I received an ARC, but not until after the book was released. Still want to read this one soon – Sigma Force is one of my favorite series, and I’ve liked everything I’ve read by James Rollins.

A war is coming, a battle that will stretch from the prehistoric forests of the ancient past to the cutting-edge research labs of today, all to reveal a true mystery buried deep within our DNA, a mystery that will leave readers changed forever . . .

1. Sweet Pepper Hero by J.J. Cook

sweet peppet hero
Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mystery Book #4

2. When Eric had been there, the door had always been open for her when she got home and the porch light was on.

She realized that she didn’t expect to see him anymore. He’d been gone so long, it almost seemed like a weird dream that he’d been there at all.

3. I think Sweet Pepper Tennessee sounds like a great place, if you overlook the murder and arson going on! 🙂 It’s also close to Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, which I love. Overall, yes, I would like to live there.

I’m part of the blog tour for this newly released cozy! Be sure to come back tomorrow to read more about it and enter a giveaway to win a paperback copy.

Now for my answers this week…

1. Starscape by Benita J. Prins
Starscape

2. Galdore pursed his lips and turned away. He felt that he knew in his heart the Starterns’ theory, and that it was true, but his will could not force his brain to process the knowledge.

3. Not sure yet! I’m only on chapter 3, and nothing terrible has presented itself so far, so I suppose it would be ok to visit this world, but I don’t think I would want to stay forever. Too medieval sounding for my taste! 🙂

Now your turn – what are YOU reading this week?

WAYRW – Crimson Shore by Lincoln and Child

Now for my answers this week…

1. Crimson Shore by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child
Crimson Shore (Agent Pendergast, #15)
Agent Pendergast #15 – thanks to Kristi over at the Hidden Staircase blog for letting me know this one was available on NetGalley! This is one of my all-time favorite series.

2. “Please take care to park within the lines,” said Constance to the young man she had recruited to drive the car the length of town. He’d been gawking at the car while she stood there, wondering what to do, and she had offered to let him drive it. He had leapt at the chance. Only once he was in the car had she noticed he smelled like fish.

3. This installment in the Pendergast series takes place in a small coastal town in Massachusetts. Except for the nasty police chief, I don’t think I would mind living there.

Now how about you? What are you reading this Wednesday? Be sure to leave a link to your own post if you’ve done one!

Audiobook Review – Station Eleven

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
Read by Kirsten Potter

Condensed Goodreads description:

Station ElevenAn audacious, darkly glittering novel set in the eerie days of civilization’s collapse, Station Eleven tells the spellbinding story of a Hollywood star (Arthur), his would-be savior (Jeevan), and a nomadic group of actors (including Kirsten) roaming the scattered outposts of the Great Lakes region, risking everything for art and humanity.

Spanning decades, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, this suspenseful, elegiac novel is rife with beauty. As Arthur falls in and out of love, as Jeevan watches the newscasters say their final good-byes, and as Kirsten finds herself caught in the crosshairs of the prophet, we see the strange twists of fate that connect them all. A novel of art, memory, and ambition, Station Eleventells a story about the relationships that sustain us, the ephemeral nature of fame, and the beauty of the world as we know it.

Genre: Fiction / SciFi / Dystopian
My Rating: **** (4 of 5 stars)

This is an instance of a book cover catching my attention, and refusing to let it go. I started seeing this one first in magazines, and then bookstores and websites all over the place until I decided I had to read it. I had the impression that it took place in a post-pandemic world, but that was about it. I’m glad I didn’t read the book blurb more carefully because I don’t think that I would have been interested in the story of a Hollywood star and a band of traveling actors. I would probably not have picked it up, and I would have missed something beautiful.

This book is, at its heart, a story of survival and resilience. It starts at a point in time just as the flu pandemic is beginning. We meet a variety of individuals at a performance of King Lear, and then follow several of them both forward and backward in time, learning about their past, and watching as their futures unfold in the new world. The author’s main focus is on the characters, what drives them, what mattered to them before the collapse of civilization and afterward, and their personal relationships more than the disaster itself.

Kirsten Potter does an excellent job with the narration – her voice and timing were a pleasure to listen to.

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and would recommend it to fans of almost any type of fiction or word lovers in general. It was so full of memorable quotes, that I caught myself jotting them down to read later, and that isn’t something I normally do. Since I have them though, I’d like to leave you with a few of my favorites…

“Hell is the absence of the people you long for.”

“It was gorgeous and claustrophobic. I loved it and I always wanted to escape.”

“What I mean to say is, the more you remember, the more you’ve lost.”

“First we only want to be seen, but once we’re seen, that’s not enough anymore. After that, we want to be remembered.”

“She had never entirely let go of the notion that if she reached far enough with her thoughts she might find someone waiting, that if two people were to cast their thoughts outward at the same moment they might somehow meet in the middle.”

“There are certain qualities of light that blur the years.”

What Are You Reading Wednesday – 12/2/15

whatareyoureadingwed

First of all – an apology. I’ve been lax in posting lately, and even missed my Top Ten Tuesday this week! Between traveling out of state to visit family last week, and a sick child this week, I’ve just gotten behind. I’ll try to get myself back on track over the next few days though! 🙂

So, on with the post. What Are You Reading Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by It’s A Reading Thing. To participate, open the book you are currently reading to page 34 (or 34% in your ebook) and answer these three questions.

The Questions are:
1. What’s the name of your current read?

2. Go to page 34 in your book or 34% in your eBook and share a complete sentence. (or two!)

3. Would you like to live in the world that exists within your book? Why or why not?

Now for my answers this week…

1. I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Ashley Bell by Dean Koontz (it’s available 12//8/15)
Ashley Bell

2. “While he checked her eyes with an ophthalmoscope, he asked a few questions – her name, date of birth, social security number – and she realized that he wanted to ascertain whether or not her memory had been affected by whatever was happening to her.”

3. I probably wouldn’t mind living in Southern California. I would mind dealing with the people that Bibi (the main character is not actually Ashley Bell :))  is currently on the run from, however!

So, are you reading anything this week? Leave me a comment or a link back to your own post!

Audiobook Review – The Queen of the Tearling

The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
Narrated by Katherine Kellgren

The Queen of the Tearling (The Queen of the Tearling, #1)Her throne awaits . . . if she can live long enough to take it.

It was on her nineteenth birthday that the soldiers came for Kelsea Glynn. They’d come to escort her back to the place of her birth – and to ensure she survives long enough to be able to take possession of what is rightfully hers.

But like many nineteen-year-olds, Kelsea is unruly, has high principles and believes she knows better than her elders. Unlike many nineteen-year-olds, she is about to inherit a kingdom that is on its knees – corrupt, debauched and dangerous.

Kelsea will either become the most fearsome ruler the kingdom has ever known . . . or be dead within the week.

Now for my answers this week…

1. The Maze Runner by James Dashner
The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1)

2. “Where are we going?”, Thomas asked, still feeling the weight of seeing those walls close, thinking about the maze, the confusion, the fear. He told himself to stop or he’d drive himself crazy.

3. No – don’t want to live there. I don’t even want to visit. I’m not that far into the book yet and not sure where (or even when) “the glade” is, but I am completely sure that I would not want to end up there.

Your turn! Leave a comment to tell us what you’re reading this week.

3. Would you like to live in the world that exists within your book? Why or why not?

Now for my answers this week…I’ve been trying to write more than I’ve been reading this month, but I’m still listening to audio books during my commute. I’ve just finished Queen of the Tearling (and hope to get a review written soon), and now I’m listening to Station Eleven.

1. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel (narrated by Kirsten Potter)
Station Eleven

2. Since I can’t find page 34 🙂 , I’m just going to give you a few quotes from the book…

“Hell is the absence of the people you long for.”
“Survival is insufficient.” (yes, it is originally from Star Trek!)
“What I mean to say is, the more you remember, the more you’ve lost.”
“It was gorgeous and claustrophobic. I loved it and I always wanted to escape.”

3. No, no, and a thousand times no!!! A devastating flu pandemic has wiped out more than 90% of the Earth’s population. Even if I survived, I’d rather just stay here…

Now tell me, what are you reading (or listening to) this week?
