3. It very much depends…I would not have a problem living in Lake Tahoe, but if i had to take off like Chessa, then no thank you! 🙂

Top Ten Books I Love

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Every Tuesday they post a new Top Ten list prompt. This week’s prompt is… Ten Books I Really Love But Feel Like I Haven’t Talked About Enough. I  had a little trouble deciding how to tackle this one, so I’m just going to list the first ten books that pop into my head when I think of books I love that I haven’t recently reviewed. These won’t be in any particular order this week, and doing it this way made for an eclectic list!

Be sure to leave me a link to your own post or just tell me what some of your favorites are in the comments below.

Between Good and Evil – Blog Tour and Giveaway!

between good ad evil large banner640

Be sure to keep reading for a chance to win one of 2 print copies!

Between_Good_And_EvilSynopsis from Goodreads: Years after the Willis Asylum closed, the secrets of its past lingered in its decaying halls as a reminder to the good people of Auburn Notch—when Evil closes a door, he also opens a window. Sheriff Promise Flynn was new to the town, and she was about to find out some windows should never be opened.

Promise Flynn is an overly impulsive Metro Detective whose disregard for procedure finally resulted in her being shot and left for dead during an investigation. To repair her bruised ego and splintered confidence she abandons the callous dark alleys of Chicago to patrol the quiet, birch-lined streets of Auburn Notch—a favorite vacation spot of her youth. For two years everything was idyllic, until the body of a young girl found in the abandoned asylum outside of town awakens the insecurities she thought her new life would insulate her from.

As the new Sheriff she begins her investigation ignoring the similarities between the young woman’s death and her own case, oblivious to being unexpectedly recognized and penciled in at the top of a clever murderer’s To-Do list. Her internal struggle intensifies when a discredited crime reporter from the past suspiciously arrives in town to resurrect his threadbare reputation, along with an FBI agent chasing down a lead in a cold case. Both men quickly become entangled in Flynn’s investigation and her attempts to finally put her past to rest. (read more)

Interview with author Sherry Mayes

Stop The WorldHi Everyone.

Please join me in welcoming Sherry Mayes to the blog today. Sherry is the author of the recently published YA book, Stop the World, which is for sale now on Amazon, and she’s answered a few questions for me so that we can get to know her.

Be sure to check out her Facebook and Amazon pages for more info about Stop the World!

1.     When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Since I was fifteen years old it was a real passion of mine.

2.     What is your current writing project, or what did you just finish?

I’ve recently published my YA novel, Stop the World.

3.     Do you have a favorite book that you’ve written? (or a favorite character, setting, etc…)

Jody Angel Taylor the main protagonist is a much loved character.  She was inspired by a true story of a very gutsy lady.  She has a car accident and nearly loses her life and then her mind but she is feisty and she somehow pulls herself through a nightmare.

4. Do you have any writing rituals that you adhere to?

When I am writing I wake up in the morning with a thirst to get on with things. So I can write for hours at a time until I get hungry or my eyes get red from staring at the screen.

5.     Do you experience writers’ block, and if so, how do you deal with it?

If I feel blocked I always just sit down and start writing. Often just getting on with it, gets you through it.

6. Your favorite authors / genres / writing influences?

My reading range is wide.  I love thrillers, suspense and YA.  I’m a fan of Gillian Flynn, John Green and Emily Bronte.

7. Do your real life acquaintances or experiences ever find their way into your writing?

Absolutely. Stop the world is inspired by someone I met and I feel that is the only way I can personally create a story by drawing on what happens in everyday life – especially when you are creating a character with depth.

8. Coffee or tea?

Both! Depending on my mood I can down a cup of either.

9. What hobbies do you enjoy when you’re not writing?

I love to cook and socialise with friends. I’m also a big movie buff so love to go and see a film.

10. Which fictional character would like to invite for dinner? Why?

I’d love to invite Alice from Alice in Wonderland along with the mad hatter and maybe the rabbit.  They’d all have so many interesting stories to tell.

11. What book(s) / series can we expect to see from you in the future?

I’ve just finished a historical thriller called Letters to the Pianist which should be out in a few months.

Thank you Sherry!

Will PRH be cancelling your favorite cozy mystery series?

For my cozy mystery readers who may not be aware….

There has been a merger between Random House and the Penguin Group, and  Random House has now decided not to renew several cozy mystery series. I won’t pretend to understand the reasoning behind this, but it does include cozies published by Berkley Prime Crime and NAL Obsidian lines. It sounds like they will be cutting the number of these books that are published drastically. I do not have a comprehensive list of series that will not be continued, but Avery Aames Cheese Shop Mysteries (one of my favorites!) and Molly McRae’s Haunted Yarn Shop Mysteries are among the casualties.

For those who are so inclined, please take a minute to visit Penguin Random House’s contact form (click the logo, scroll to the Send Us a Note drop-down near the bottom, and select General Feedback) and ask them (in a polite and respectful manner, of course! 🙂 ) not to discontinue their cozy mystery series.

Penguin Random House

A Facebook group called Save Our Cozies has been created for those who would like to stay informed – please visit them for an up-to-date list of series that have and haven’t been renewed. Please feel free to use the sharing links below to tweet or to share this post on Facebook.

AS ALWAYS – the best way to keep your favorite series alive is to buy the books, or ask your library to buy them so you can check them out, and of course READ the books, and review them! 🙂

Review – The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins

The Library at Mount Char
by Scott Hawkins

The Library at Mount Char Goodreads Description:

Carolyn’s not so different from the other human beings around her. She’s sure of it. She likes guacamole and cigarettes and steak. She knows how to use a phone. She even remembers what clothes are for.

After all, she was a normal American herself, once.

That was a long time ago, of course—before the time she calls “adoption day,” when she and a dozen other children found themselves being raised by a man they learned to call Father.

Father could do strange things. He could call light from darkness. Sometimes he raised the dead. And when he was disobeyed, the consequences were terrible.

In the years since Father took her in, Carolyn hasn’t gotten out much. Instead, she and her adopted siblings have been raised according to Father’s ancient Pelapi customs. They’ve studied the books in his library and learned some of the secrets behind his equally ancient power.  (read more)

Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray – #WAYRW

Now for my answers this week…

2. Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray – Book #2 of the Diviners series
I’m listening to the audiobook, and January LaVoy is narrating again – yay! (See my review of the audiobook edition of The Diviners if you don’t know why I’m so happy about that.)
Lair of Dreams (The Diviners, #2)

2. Well, it’s an audiobook, so it’s hard to find page 34! 🙂 Here are a few random quotes instead….

For dreams, too, are ghosts, desires chased in sleep, gone by morning.

It was funny how one afternoon with a best friend could set a girl right.

This is how it is now. There is strength in acceptance, Ling. Your legs have been taken from you. But how you choose to live with that has not.

3. The story takes place in the 1920’s in New York City. I’d love a peek, but I wouldn’t want to stay. Couldn’t do without all of my more modern conveniences, or my right to vote!!

What’s everyone else reading this week?
